Just six months after losing her 16-year-old son Jett last January, Kelly Preston quietly decided to return to work by starring in The Last Song.

She made the decision “because Miley [Cyrus] asked me herself to play her mom,” Preston, 47, tells PEOPLE. “I was really moved. It was the perfect movie to sort of get my feet wet.”

As they filmed the Nicholas Sparks drama in Tybee Island, Ga., last summer, “Julie Anne [Robinson, the director], Adam [Shankman, the producer] and Miley took such great care of me,” says Preston, who brought her daughter Ella Bleu, 9, along for the trip. “They were wonderful with my schedule. I just worked a little bit.”

But she spent a lot of time bonding with Cyrus off screen. “We’ve been friends for awhile,” Cyrus told PEOPLE in January. “We got even closer on this movie so it was cool to spend the summer with people you really like.”

“I love her so much,” Preston says of her costar. “She’s such a good girl.”

The Last Song hits theaters March 31.

Though his best friend Corey Feldman said Corey Haim died with little money to his name, the late actor’s funeral expenses won’t fall to his mother.

Judy Haim, who is suffering from cancer, tells Access Hollywood that the city of Toronto will help her by covering the cost of Haim’s funeral, which is set for Tuesday. The late-actor was Canadian.

In a statement released Sunday, the city of Toronto said it “does not confirm or comment on any potential, pending or active applications for assistance in such matters. Therefore, the City will not be commenting further on these reports.”

Judy also says that Startifacts.com, a celebrity memorabilia site, offered to pay for her son’s tombstone and other miscellaneous expenses. It had not yet provided the funds. A rep for the company said that it would offer $20,000 to the Haim family.

Though the actor had done several small film projects in the last year, friend Chance Corbitt, who first met Haim while filming The Lost Boys, said the actor often relied on personal appearances at conventions for income. “It was an easy way to pay the bills,” says Corbitt. “He would do one of those conventions every other month.”

Matthew McConaughey is a famously laid-back guy. But what about his girlfriend, and mother of his two kids, Camila Alves?

“I try to keep [life] as simple as I can,” Alves, 27, tells PEOPLE in a new interview. “I try to keep it as calm as I can.”

As a mom to son Levi, 20 months, and daughter Vida, 9 weeks, Alves is juggling motherhood, her career as a handbag designer, her relationship with McConaughey and her latest gig, as host of Bravo’s Shear Genius. It’s that anything-goes mentality that keeps her sane. “The word ‘stress,’ I don’t believe in that,” she says.

In fact, she’s reveling in motherhood – and enjoying watching her kids grow up. “Every stage they go through, it is something different and new and exciting,” she says of her kids. “Levi’s so much fun! He’s just into everything. He’s repeating everything … putting words together.”

Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi just gave birth to her daughter on Feb. 20 – and already mother and daughter are hitting the town. On Thursday, the two were photographed on a New York bench. Next stop, Le Bernardin?

Lakshmi, 39, has not identified her 3-week-old daughter’s father. But a friend of the TV host told PEOPLE just before Krishna’s birth that Lakshmi was ready for motherhood. “Padma is very happy. She’s wanted to be a mom for a long time. She was very relieved and happy when she got pregnant.”

Skeptics, beware: Aiden Chase knows what you’re thinking, and it’s not just because he’s psychic.

The new manager for Heidi Montag accepts and understands that not everybody’s onboard with his profession – he’s called a “healer and intuitive” – and he’s OK with that. In fact, he’s in the OK business. He helps people feel better about themselves and guide their futures – futures, he says, he can often see (unless sports bets are on the line). He also says he has the ability to communicate with spirits, including dead celebrities.

1. He’s a Recent Part of Montag’s Life:
“One of my clients referred me to Spencer and Heidi. I went up to their house, just after Heidi’s surgery, doing healing work, energy clearing, helping put their future paths on the map. For about a month, Heidi has been asking me: ‘Be my manager.’ When I really thought about it, really meditated, I realized I have been doing the job anyway. They had been consulting with me, [asking]: ‘What do you think about this?’ It had been working for them.”

2. "It" Is Sort of Like What Mom Used to Do:
“I’m a healer and intuitive. What that means is I’m able to channel healing energy. How I like to describe that is love energy. How your mom wipes your brow and you feel better – she’s actually sending her healing energy to you,” he says. “What we do with a healing is we set an intention and put that into effect by stating or saying: If you ask for it, it will come. I channel in the energy and it neutralizes what needs to be cleared, whether it be mind, body or spirit.”

3. Yes, He Knows Some People Think He’s Nuts:
“I’m the biggest skeptic of them all. I’m skeptical of people who do my work, too. I’m OK with that. People have different opinions. That’s great. I love what I do. A lot of people enjoy and receive great benefits. Sometimes, enlightenment is not taught, it’s caught. So you can’t push it on people. If you want to, and it feels right, then great.”

4. He Can See the Future:
“First and foremost I’m intuitive. I’m using that gut instinct, that third eye that we all have. I just have a heightened sense of intuition.”

5. But He Doesn’t Know Who’ll Win the College Basketball Tournament:
“It’s funny. It doesn’t work that way. Otherwise, I’d be playing the lottery and winning.”

6. He Speaks to Spirits, Some of them Famous:
“Gene Kelly is one. He represented himself to me about a year ago. I kind of got a picture in my head of him. One of my iPods just switched to different songs, which is an interesting paranormal phenomenon, and on came a song from An American in Paris. I was like: ‘Oh. I listened and paid attention,’ and he goes, ‘Hey, brother boy, this is Gene Kelly, I’m here to help you.’ … Ever since he whispers in my ear a little help. It’s really an amazing, cool and beautiful thing.”

Gisele Bündchen is proudly showing off pictures of her 3-month-old son Benjamin on her official Web site – and the supermodel is just as open about how he’s changed her life.

“Giving birth was the most intense and life-changing experience,” Bündchen, 29, writes. “I am blessed to have been able to have a home birth surrounded by love, where I was able to feel safe. It was a powerful experience. I never felt so vulnerable but so strong at the same time.”

“I was so present to witness the biggest miracle in my life happen before my very own eyes,” her post continues. “To give life to another being – what a gift!”

When baby Benjamin, the supermodel’s first son with husband Tom Brady, was placed in her arms, “I looked into his precious eyes and felt an overwhelming, unconditional love,” she writes. “I felt a huge sense of accomplishment . . . I never felt so complete and empowered in my life.”

Bündchen also credits her mother, Vania, for being such a positive role model. “I grew up witnessing my mother always trying her best at doing all she could for the 6 of us girls. My mom devoted her entire life to her family and did it with such grace,” she writes. “She is my hero. She is the reason why I believe that a woman is the core of a family.”

Continues the supermodel: “I can only hope to be for my kids what she will and always be for us – our rock.”

They waited until they had children to get engaged. So, perhaps it’s only natural that Nicole Richie and Joel Madden’s wedding planning has been a bit delayed, too.

But Richie is planning to fix that in short order.

“I’ve been on the road. I just got home, and so it’s really going to be now that’s the time for me to sit down and think about what I want,” Richie says in an interview set to air Tuesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Asked if they’ve set a date for the nuptials, she replies: “Not yet, but soon.”

Richie, 28, and Madden, who turns 31 on Thursday, confirmed their engagement in February, with Richie saying it took becoming a mom for her to realize she was ready to be a wife.

Are Michael Jackson’s kids in danger living with his mom?

Debbie Rowe is starting to wonder. Flexing her rights as the surviving – though not custodial – parent of Michael’s eldest kids, Prince, 13, and Paris, 11, Rowe is “quite upset” to hear about antics involving a stun gun at the Jackson family compound, her close friend Marc Schaffel tells PEOPLE.

The trouble focuses on reports that Michael’s 13-year-old nephew Jaafar, who also lives with the King of Pop’s mother Katherine Jackson, bought the weapon online and may have tried to harm Michael’s third child, Blanket, 8.

“Right now she is mortified and very, very concerned over the welfare of her children and what they are being exposed to,” her pal Marc Schaffel tells PEOPLE.

The L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services has reportedly visited the Jackson’s Encino, Calif., home at last three times. Katherine’s attorney contends Blanket was never threatened and that Paris never saw the weapon. But Schaffel says that Rowe was informed that Paris and Prince both saw the gun.

Rowe, who has not seen the children since Jackson’s death, “will take steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” but in the meantime she is “waiting to see what Children and Family Services says first,” says Schaffel.
