Breastfeeding with overactive letdown, please help!!!!!?

Breastfeeding with overactive letdown, please help!!!!!?

My son is almost 5 weeks old. And exclusively breastfed. However, I have an insanely oversupply/overactive let down. I saw the lactation consultant at the hospital I delivered at and she told me to nurse in a reclined position, and have him lie on his side. No such luck.

My son latches on, screams bloody murder, sucks in tons of air, has horrible gas, spits up excessively, ALL the symptoms of over active let down. I am at a loss of what to do, and how to fix this. The ONLY way I can nurse him is to pump out 2-3 ounces of milk PRIOR to feeding him, which is just telling my body to produce more milk, which I DO NOT want to do! I have over 200 ounces of milk in the freezer! I am also feeding my 15 month old around 30 ounces of pumped milk a day! Oh my god I have so much milk!

I want to be able to enjoy nursing my son, my nipples are soo sore from him clamping down, and hes miserable nursing, and I refuse to stop!

What can I do to make it better without pumping so much! If I pump without feeding him, I can get up to 8-9 ounces FROM ONE BREAST! I RARELY pump, but my breasts are soo engorged. I only feed him from one breast at a time, but he is still so miserable at the breast.

Please somebody help me! If you had this problem, what did you do to solve it. It seems like everything I do, isn't working. My son is gaining tons of weight (birth weight=8.4 lbs) (1 month weight=12.8lbs) He has his required wet diapers and his bowel movements are yellow, not green, so I know he is getting enough hind milk, because I am pumping out some of the foremilk.

Please please please help me!

I had a ton of milk for my son. He would often choke b/c it was coming out so fast but at 6-7 weeks it just leveled out. It sounds like your son is gaining weight nicely so I'd try giving him just a bit of the foremilk every once in a while rather than draining it… that will signal your body to stop producing so much milk. Also, the foremilk is thirst quenching and will be nice for him in the summer months. Your body is made to adapt but you need to watch out for engorgement. I would definately stop pumping if it's really bothering the two of you. My daughter gets horrible gas too but this all settled down at 6 weeks. Maybe you'll have the same luck.Try the Laleche League – I often find they are more helpful. Source(s): http://www.lllc.ca/

At his age, I wouldn't worry so much. I had the same issues with my daughters for the first few months. I can remember them choking on the milk, coughing, and getting sprayed in the eyes. After about 2-3 months, my milk supply became more suited towards their needs. I also would not worry about your child's weight. It will even out as well, and I am sure that if he were on formula, he would be heavier. I believe strongly that breastfeeding is important to you and to your baby. Don't give up. Just know that you are going to be changing clothes as often as the baby for awhile. Keep with it, know that you are doing the right thing. It will get easier.
