Accidentally deleted my DVD drive.?

I was "cleaning" my son's hand me down lap top and accidentally deleted the DVD drive. How can I fix this so I can watch movies again. It's been deleted from the trash as well and I don't have back up files or the original installation discs.
Thanks a bunch!

reboot. windows should see that there is "new hardware" and will try to add drivers too it.if it really does need some kind of special driver then go to the manufacturer's website they should have it for download.

Maybe you deleted a short cut. Take a look in "my computer" and see of it is still there, normally listed as Drive D.If not go to control panel and click add hardware.

… well, if you removed the DRIVERS from the DEVICE MANAGER they will come back next time you start the laptop…. if you removed the DVD PLAYBACK SOFTWARE, you can perform a factory recovery to put it back.. of course, that will erase everything on the computer and reset all the software back to how it was when it was new… or you could just install VLC, http://www.videolan.org/vlc which is a free media player that plays all audio files, all video files, and DVDs.end of line

If it is the entire CD/DVD drive then you could go to the support area for the laptop, ever manufacturer has one..what make and model would help…If it is just software to play dvds , use VLC as the guy above says..

Not sure I understand what you have done, but I think if you sent the icon to the trash bin then all you have deleted is the shortcut to it.If you go to the My Computer icon and open it is the CD drive listed? If it is simply right click the icon and in the list is an item called "create shortcut" this item is available in XP, Vista and Windows 7 and simply select it and it will recreate the shortcut for you.If the CD drive is not listed in the My Computer list you can go to Control Panel, and either System (in XP and Vista) or Device Manager (Vista and Windows 7). You are looking for DVD/CD-ROM drives in the list, if their is none you should be able to use Scan for Hardware Changes option and this should pick it up. If it is there but has a yellow ! sign by it then you may have to reload the driver but more likely it is a registry error. You can try to re-load the Chipset drivers, this often re-installs the missing links, if not try the following – CAUTION this is editing the registry, DO NOT change anything else!1. Click Start, and then click Run.2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentContr…4. In the right pane, click UpperFilters. Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters. Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. 8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.10. Exit Registry Editor.11. Restart the computer.this should solve your missing drive issue.
